Any chance we could get a 350mb xvid? The MPEG1 files aren't appreciably better than the streamable mpeg4 files, and neither of them compare favorably the RM on democracynow.org. I just wonder why you use such an outdated format as MPEG1 when there are more modern formats that encode much better. Still it's much nicer to download from here than stream from democracynow.org, thanks for your efforts here.

I agree 100% to the above post. Encoding the MPEG1 in Xvid or DivX would make the file about half as big with equal quality, or allow way higher quality at the same filesize.

Also it would enable me to seed this thing on BitTorrent (i contacted demnow twice on this matter months ago but got no response)

The set of available formats is set by archive.org, not by DN! staff. Perhaps they will consider adding high-bitrate MPEG4 ("Divx") in the future.

As for BitTorrent, while an interesting technology, it works best if lots of people are trying to download the exact same file at the same time. It would not work well for offering the large back archive that we are able to offer in conjunction with archive.org. Perhaps we will in the future experiment with offering torrents of the most recent day's show, but for now, it seems like archive.org's bandwidth, in conjunction with that which we get from realnetworks, is sufficient to support our users.

actually, it seems like the H.246 codec (mpeg4 v10) is the one to go with in the future: http://www.apple.com/quicktime/technologies/h264/ It's standard, much smaller than even Xvid or Divx at the same quality and has more diverse applications. peace, jonna

i'm one of the administrators of chomskytorrents.org, a minor bittorrent site with progressive, radical content - i would love to have the most recent shows available on BitTorrent (and add them to our index), just like the torrents on radio.indymedia.org.

that could really save you some bandwidth costs for the download peaks when a new show airs, couldn't it?

plus the torrents could be distributed to popular bittorrent sites (i would volunteer for that), to get even more attention (and publicity for demnow, of course...).
